The Outrage You Forward Without Reading

The Outrage You Forward Without Reading

We send the same angry headlines to the same people, and it is rarely about changing anyone's mind.

Take Quiz

A friend sends me a link at eleven at night. No message, just the link. I open it, read two paragraphs, and I can feel the shape of it already — the familiar outrage, the familiar villain, the familiar ending where we are right and they are wrong. I send back a thumbs up. We have done this maybe forty times.

🔁 Why we forward the same anger

It is not really information. Nobody learns anything. The link does not convert anyone. The people I send it to already agree with me, and the people who disagree will never see it.

A person at a kitchen table lit by a phone screen, with a neighbor's silhouette on the far side of the wall.

So what is the message actually doing? I think it is less like a newspaper and more like a knock on the wall. I am here. You are there. We are still on the same side.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 The message is addressed to us

When I forward something, I am not talking to the other side. I am talking to my own. The link is a small proof that I belong, that I noticed, that I am paying attention to the right things. It costs nothing and it says something.

In a week where I did not call anyone, did not show up anywhere, did not do much of anything, the forward is a way of being present without being present. It is a hand on the shoulder from across the room.

⚡ The rush of being sure

There is a feeling I get when I read a story that confirms what I already think. It is quick and warm. It is the opposite of the feeling I get reading something that complicates my view, which is slow and a little sour.

A person smiling faintly while scrolling a glowing phone in a dark room, with unread books behind them.

The forward is a way of chasing that first feeling again. Not because I need the facts, but because I like the certainty. It is a small, cheap, repeatable pleasure, and there is nothing wrong with pleasure. It is just that this one does not build anything. It only maintains.

⚖️ Maybe the stakes are real

I want to be fair here. It is easy to call this empty, but a lot of the anger is not manufactured. People are worried about real things — their rent, their kids' school, the way the country is going.

When you cannot do much about any of it, forwarding something is one of the few actions available. It is a vote, a shout, a small mark on the wall. Dismissing it as mere identity is a way of saying the worry is not real. It is real. The forward is just a poor tool for a real feeling.

🧱 What the wall knock does not do

I still send the links. I still get them. And I notice that the friendships I have that survive disagreement are the ones where we never forward anything at all. We just talk.

Two friends talking across a small table in a plain room, with newspapers on a shelf behind them.

The forwarding happens with the people I already agree with, and it keeps us warm but it keeps us still. Maybe that is fine. Maybe a friendship needs both — the ones you argue with and the ones you knock on the wall for. I do not know which one I would keep if I had to choose.
